Un nouveau coin d’Osaka dans lequel je ne m’etais jamais promene: Shinsekai ou le Nouveau Monde. Ce vieux quartier situe tout pres de Tennoji et de son zoo. Il a ete construit en 1912 sur les models de New York et de Paris (Rien que ca!). Il y avait alors a l’epoque un parc d’attraction qui resta ouvert jusqu’en 1923.
Apres la guerre, cette partie de la ville ne fut pas reconstruite et devint l’un des quartiers les plus pauvres. ShinSekai a aussi la reputation d’etre mal frequente et d’etre dangereux. Malgre tout cela, ce coin est tres sympa pour s’y promener! Effectivement, on est loin du tout moderne et bien brillant du reste de la ville. En effet, il y a pas mal de pochtrons et de sans abris. Mais apres tout, c’est ca aussi le Japon! A l’heure ou nous nous sommes promenes (vers 16h), nous n’avons pas eu de problemes du tout!
Here is a new part of Osaka that I had never been to: Shinsekai or the NewWorld. This old neighborhood is near Tennoji and it’s zoo in the South part of the city. It was built in 1912 according to the layout of New York city and Paris ( Wowww). There was then an amusement park. However, it was closed in 1923.
After the war, Shinsekai was not rebuilt resulting in becoming the poorest part of Osaka. Today, it has a seedy reputation and also to be dangerous. When we went, in the middle of the afternoon, we didn’t feel frightened at all. Indeed, there are a lot of drunks and homeless people around but this is Japan too, far away from the shiny malls and traditional streets…
On peut aussi aller sur la tour Tsutenkaku, manger a pleins de Kushi-katsu (brochettes de viande, legumes et poisson frites) dans les restaurants locaux ou bien du fugu pour les plus courageux et se promener dans les arcades marchandes avec des magasins retro, des salles de jeux de go et de Shoji.
While stroling around, you can climb the Tsutenkaku tower to get a view of Osaka, or eat plenty of Kushi-katsu (fish, meat and veggies deep fried skewers) ou some fugu. Walking along the old shopping arcade is always interesting, full of people going to bars, restaurants, playing go or shoji.
Nous avons pu croise cet arrangement plutot incongru de cadenas en forme de coeur dans une des arcades. On peut donc acheter un petit cadenas, mettre son nom et celui de son-sa cheri(e) pour montrer son amour eternel. Sympa et un peu effrayant a la fois cette histoire d’amour et de cadenas, non?
Mais qui garde la cle?? la est le secret!!
In one of the arcades, we came upon this interesting display of locks in a heart shape. As you can guess, you can buy a lock, write your name and the one of your loved one in order to show your commitment. It’s was kind of quirky and also a little scary! We didn’t find out who got to keep the key afterwards!

La semaine dernière, le Japon a célèbre le festival des étoiles ou la rencontre entre deux divinites Orihime et Hikoboshi, ou aussi appelées Vega et Altar. D’apres la legende, la voie lactée sépara les deux amants et ils ne pouvaient se rencontrer qu’une fois par an le 7eme jour du 7eme mois.
Le Japon célèbre cette coutume en écrivant des petits messages, ou de la poésie sur de petits bouts de papier qui sont accroches sur des branches de bambou. Nous sommes allés a Tennoji dans le sud d’Osaka pour y voir les décorations. Le festival touchait a sa fin et l’ambiance était très relax, loin des foules habituelles d’Osaka. A l’entrée, un hommage au célèbre festival de Tanabata de Sendai dans le Tohoku était rendu avec ces grandes décorations:
Tanabata is the Japanese star festival. It celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (represented by the stars Vega and Altair respectively). According to legend, the Milky Way separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month.
In present-day Japan, people generally celebrate this day by writing wishes, sometimes in the form of poetry, on small pieces of paper, and hanging them onbamboo, sometimes with other decorations. We went to Tennoji, in the South part of Osaka to admire the decorations. The festival was very casual and not very crowded. At the entrance of the temple, we could admire decorations from the Sendai Tanabata Festival in the Tohoku region which is affected by the recent events.
